Petite Fashion Challenge No. 11: Vacation Vogue

The challenge: Put together an outfit made for sightseeing. It should be one that will be comfortable for walking around in and can last you from the early morning until dinner and drinks in the evening. Plus, you're on vacation, so you'd better make sure you look good in photos, which you'll have for years to come.
You can choose just one outfit but vary it by adding or taking off layers or accessories to take you from the a.m. to the p.m. and make one outfit easier to last through the day.

I wouldn't call myself a trendy tourist, but I do try to look good and be comfortable when I travel. My husband and I really like to pack in a lot of sightseeing, eating and exploring while on vacation, so I need outfits that are comfy, easy to pack and can last all day.

Something I think is great for this are pants that can be rolled up and buttoned to form capris. This way you can wear your pants long early in the morning or late at night when it is cold, and roll them up during the afternoon when the sun is out.

I also like to wear a sleeveless top for the heat and bring a thin sweater or cardigan in my bag to throw on if it rains or gets chilly. This is also essential if we'll be visiting a church or temple, where your shoulders and arms need to be covered.

Old Navy white pants that double as capris. LOFT tank and handmade scarf purchased in Laos.
My go-to look for traveling when it's hot.

Add a layer and roll down your pants for later in the day.
Target Xhileration top in XS.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the challenge!

  5. Oh, I forgot to mention that for our long trips overseas we bring backpacks, not suitcases, making strategic packing even more important!

  6. Thanks for hosting this month's challenge, Alli! I know it's hard work. A tank top paired with a thin cardigan is a perfect combo when it comes to travel.

  9. I think the real challenge should have required everyone to find fashion-friendly sneakers to use for the day look. I'm sorry, but flats won't cut it in a big city. Kudos to Alterations Needed for being the only one to admit that flats beat up her feet in Chicago.

When I went to London this summer I was looking for stylish shoe advice, but ultimately I just went with black Pumas. I hated having to do it, but at least I wasn't in pain and I could keep up with my New Yorker boyfriend and his family.

  10. Wow, what great photos! I can't stop looking at the one of your reflection in the water!! Great photographer!! That's so simple but genius! I love your day outfit for a school day look too :)

My pics were taken with my tripod...at home... in front of closet doors again :-/ and I did originally sign up for this challenge but I forgot and have not had the chance to cut off my head--I am in an evening class for the next 2 hours but will rush home to edit my photos). So, please keep me on the list.

    xoxo

  11. Rolling/unrolling pants is something I've recently been trying out too... who would've thought it'd be so versatile?! Both looks are great Alli, and thank you for hosting!

  12. Elle: I'm adding you now.

La Professionnelle: Adding you back now :)

Deelirium: I totally agree with you on the shoes. I would cry if I really wore these shoes on vacation. On my most recent trip I got some hiking sandals that weren't the greatest looking, but I thought they were passable and oh so comfortable. I am going to check for the Croc ballet flats another challenger used for her post and see how those fit.

  14. Thanks ski! Btw, I was at the Dianese store the other day and was surprised at the fitting xs ski pants for our (5'1") height! :-O

  15. I totally agree that a cardigan is essential - it is light-weight and can be tucked into purse when unused, and is much more convenient than coats or jackets! :)

Thanks for hosting the challenge! It is a lot of fun!

  18. I love the roll-up pants! What a great idea for changing up your look while also keeping you warm.

And thanks for hosting the challenge, definitely a fun one. :)

  19. I've missed your posts! Love that the pants double as capris - anything multi-functional gets an "A" from me. Thanks for hosting this challenge!

  20. What a versatile pair of pants! Ahh...yes...shoes for traveling. I was determined not to bring sneakers on my last trip, although my classic suede Pumas are oh-so-comfy, but I feel like a kid in them. I knew I was in for a little bit of pain, but is it weird that I'd rather deal with the consequences than wear unpretty shoes? :P

  21. The rolled up pants is such a good idea!

    Thanks so much for hosting!

  22. Love your relaxed and stylish outfit!
Please could you add me to the list - late - as I'm in UK.
    Thanks so much!

  23. What a great transition. I love white pants but they tend to get diry easily esp. being around little kids all day. I love the flower details on the shoulder and sleeve of the second time - so pretty and unique. So that I missed out on this Petite Challenge. I am new to the blog world, is there a particular time schedule that these challenges occur? Would love to get in on the next one. Thanks!

  24. Hi! I just posted my entry as well! Could you add me in, sorry!

I love the white pants! They look super practical yet chic.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love those pants...they look super comfy. White pants are so versatile and the scarf is a nice touch. I discovered scarves when I was in Europe - they are the perfect accessory. I came home and bought 5 of them and wear them all the time. I want to add some white leg white pants to my wardrobe, and this post has inspired me to wear them despite not having mile long supermodel legs.

  26. Love your blog. I am 5'1" and do not blog but I have learned so much by following you and other petite fashionistas, especially the petite fashion challenges. I have a suggestion: Outerwear can be particularly challenging for petites. Why not a PFC called OUTERWEAR CHIC.. This would be helpful with the cold winter months approaching...The look could be dressy or casual and must include an outerwear garment appropriate for being outdoors in inclement weather.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with Janice, an outerwear challenge would be great. And with shoes that are appropriate (and chic) for walking through snow and rain to work.

  28. Janie and deelirium: Love the ideas for an outerwear challenge! There is a thread here where you can post ideas for upcoming challenges: http://forum.alterationsneeded.com/petite-fashion-challenge-sign-up-list-t354.html. I think I am Khatu is hosting the next one.

  31. love your blog, perfect for a petite girl like me.
I realized only too late that the baggy bonfire snowboard pants I bought were far far too big and totally drag on the floor (they are white as well :( ... ) Would've been very helpful to have read our blog before I bought them!

Followed you :) Hope you follow me too!

    take care,
    xoxo champagne
